The sea

Beach, sea and fish

The Adriatic is about half an hour's drive, by the forest road through the field or by motorway via Vrata. Close enough for a day trip, far enough that you do not feel the crowds.

Getting there

Two ways down to the sea

From Lič you can reach the Adriatic two ways, and both are worth trying.

  • Through the field to Novi Vinodolski

The road runs straight across the field you see from the balcony, then through the forest to Novi Vinodolski, in about half an hour. It is a slower forest road, not the motorway, but you can stop for lunch on the way at Vagabundina koliba or Konoba Vera.

  • Via Vrata onto the motorway

The Vrata junction is a few minutes away, then it is motorway: Rijeka in half an hour, Krk in 45 minutes, Opatija in an hour.

Where to

Where to go

Four places we go to, each for a different reason.

  • Novi Vinodolski

Nice beaches at the end of the forest road through the field. The nearest sea when all you want is a swim and some quiet.

  • Rijeka

Croatia's third-largest city. There are beaches, but there are better ones; Rijeka is for walking around and eating well. Definitely recommended.

  • The island of Krk

Many beautiful beaches and great food. Go mid-week if you can, as there are often traffic jams on the bridge in summer.

  • Opatija and Volosko

Beautiful for swimming, walking and eating. The Lungomare is a seaside path from Volosko through Opatija, Ika and Ičići to Lovran. Our suggestion: park in Opatija, walk to Volosko, eat in the centre by the sea and walk back. Volosko is especially lovely.

Beaches

Beaches we like

  • Sablićevo, Rijeka

A pebble beach and clean water. The nearest option when you want to get to the sea quickly.

A local favourite, with a good beach bar and a bit more life around you.

  • Čižići, Krk

Known for its healing mud. Shallow water and quiet, good with children too.

  • Medveja beach

A big beach for classic lazing about, when you want a whole day by the sea.

  • Jadranovo beach

A little tidier. Pebbles, clean water and a beach bar, all in one place.

  • Svežanj cove, Kostrena

A lesser-known cove, greenery right down to the water and quieter than the bigger beaches.

Fish

Where to eat fish

If you are at the sea anyway, do not head back without lunch. Here is where the fish is good.

  • Ribica, Kantrida (Rijeka)

Quick, fresh and uncomplicated. A local institution.

  • Ribarnica, Volosko

Volosko is a reason to come in itself, and the fish restaurant is the reason to stay for lunch.

  • Zijavica, Mošćenička Draga

A little further, but worth the drive. Fish, and the view that comes with it.

  • Primorska koliba, Malinska

On Krk, rustic and honest, with portions that leave no questions.
