What to do in Gorski kotar?

These are our own recommendations, with no sponsored content and no top-ten lists. Just what we would suggest to a friend.

Around Fužine

All of this is around Fužine, at most twenty minutes' drive from the house.

  • Lake Bajer

A path all the way round the lake and an outdoor gym. In summer people swim here too.

  • Lake Lepenica

You reach it by walking round Bajer. You can walk round both lakes; it is a longer walk, but a nice one.

  • Vrelo cave

A short cave right by the lakes, set up for visitors and fine with children.

  • Cowboy Village Roswell

A western town on a clearing in the forest between Fužine and Lokve, built for the filming of a Winnetou movie. You can book cowboy experiences there too.

A little further, but still half an hour from the house.

  • Golubinjak forest park

A lovely place for a picnic, great for kids.

  • Lake Lokve

A walk round the lake, and there should be a restaurant by the water.

  • Lokvarka cave

Deeper than Vrelo and the biggest in Gorski kotar, with a proper visitor path.

  • Zeleni vir and Vražji prolaz

A beautiful walk by a spring, on paths through a rock canyon, near Skrad just outside Delnice. Right next to it is Vražji prolaz, a narrow gorge with the path running along the stream, so you see both in one walk. Very nice.

  • Kamačnik canyon

At Vrbovsko, a little further along the motorway: a maintained path along the stream through the canyon, about three kilometres to the spring, with a picnic spot at the entrance.

Lič and Vrata

Right by the house.

  • Šumska bajka picnic area

A picnic area in Lič, four kilometres from Fužine: deer, fallow deer and wild boar in enclosures, playgrounds for children and fairy-tale figures carved in wood. Short and nice to see.

Mountains and trails

For those who want to go a little further and a little higher.

  • Walks and hiking

Trails start at the house itself; some are easy, some more demanding, and all run through the forest. For hikes see the Gorski kotar Hike guide, and the trails are in the AllTrails and Komoot apps too.

  • Risnjak National Park

The Veliki Risnjak summit and the dense forests around it are one of the most beautiful parts of Croatia, with marked trails for every level of fitness. The park entrance is about thirty minutes' drive from the house.

  • The Bijele and Samarske stijene rocks

Karst shapes in white stone, in the heart of Velika Kapela. A more demanding tour for experienced hikers, but a sight few places in Croatia can match.

  • Platak

A mountain centre above Rijeka, known for mountain-bike trails in summer and skiing in winter. A good day out.

  • Cycling

The roads are quiet and there is almost no traffic. Routes and ideas for the whole of Gorski kotar are on Gorski kotar Bike.

  • Mushroom foraging

Autumn in Gorski kotar means mushrooms. Porcini and chanterelles are there if you know what to look for, and if you don't, the walk itself is reason enough.

A day trip

When you want to see something you won't forget.

  • Plitvice Lakes

Highly recommended. Croatia's national park on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and really beautiful. It is a two-hour drive from Lič, so count on a whole day. Check tickets and prices on the park's website.
