The seasons
When to visit Gorski kotar?
Gorski kotar is not a place for just one part of the year. Every season looks different, so here is what to expect.
The seasons
Every season has its own reason
-
Winter
Snow, a fireplace, tea and quiet. Lake Bajer in Fužine can freeze over into a proper snowy scene, and Delnice puts up its Advent lights and an ice rink in December. A walk through the snow-covered forest, then back to the fire, is the whole plan for the day. Guests who come in winter often say it was the most peaceful holiday of their year.
-
Spring
The forest wakes up, the air is fresh and the trails are nearly empty. Mornings can be foggy, with mist rising off the field while you have coffee on the terrace, and afternoons are already warm enough for a longer walk. This is also when the first cycling and hiking trips of the season start, before summer brings the crowds. The colours are at their freshest, every shade of green, with blue sky reflected in the lakes.
-
Summer
The mountain is more comfortable than the coast, so you sleep well here even when it is hot down below. When the coast passes 35 degrees, the evenings and nights up here stay cool. The lakes are three kilometres away and pleasant for swimming in summer, and the sea is half an hour's drive if you need salt water. Days are long, for a walk, a bike ride, or just sitting on the terrace with nowhere to be.
-
Autumn
Colours, mushrooms and scents. In autumn the forest competes with shades of yellow, red and brown, and the air smells of damp leaves and woodsmoke. This is the season for picking porcini and chanterelles, for chestnuts, and for local food fairs in the villages nearby. Autumn is the best time for a walk with no particular destination, and for an evening by the fire afterwards.
